In the spirit of curiosity and care, the Farm has become a place of quiet experimentation. Staff grow ferns from
spores, drawn from the rich fern communities found throughout the Preserve. Today, many species—including native maidenhair, cinnamon, and lady fern—are being cultivated and returned to the gardens and lands from which
their lineage began.

In 2025, the Preserve welcomed Andy Brand as head grower, marking an important
new chapter for McAlpin Farm. With decades of experience and a deep commitment to
plant stewardship and education, Andy brings both expertise and vision to this essential
work. Under his leadership, McAlpin Farm continues to grow not only plants, but knowledge, connection, and a lasting sense of responsibility to the landscapes we share.
