MCALPIN FARM
Tucked quietly into Seal Harbor, McAlpin Farm is the heart of the Preserve’s horticultural work. While visitors may
never see it, nearly every landscape they experience across the Preserve begins here. In the greenhouses and growing fields at McAlpin Farm, plants are nurtured with patience and care, carrying forward a tradition of plant production, where flowers and vegetables were once grown for the Rockefeller family and their gardens.
Each year, approximately 20,000 plants are grown at the Farm, including annuals and perennials for the gardens,
and native plants for the gardens’ landscapes and the natural lands. Working within 6,000 square feet of greenhouse space and 1.5 acres of outdoor growing areas, staff raise plants from seed, seedlings, and existing stock,
tending them through the seasons until they are ready to take their place in the landscape. Increasingly, this work
also supports the broader conservation community, with native plants grown at McAlpin Farm destined for restoration and stewardship efforts within Acadia National Park.
