The understory of the Preserve’s forested landscapes plays an essential role in the health of these ecosystems. In
stands of spruce trees, moss forms a so, continuous ground layer, holding moisture and soil in place and creating
a quiet, resilient foundation for the trees and plants above.
The forest floor is a place of constant renewal. Beneath the moss and leaf litter, cycles of growth and decay quietly
unfold, storing the stories of the past and nurturing what will come next. Through changing seasons, soil, roots, and
fungi work together to sustain life across the landscape.
